The DG Club decided to attempt something different—a virtual treasure hunt—as more and more events migrate online. It turned out to be a great approach to keep in touch from our own homes, raise morale, and inspire cooperation. Here’s how we set up our DG Club virtual treasure hunt, with ideas to guide your own!
DG Club: Why a Virtual Treasure Hunt?
First, we had to consider why the DG Club decided on a virtual treasure hunt. We aimed for something that:
- Was inclusive and let everyone, wherever they were, take part.

- Was enjoyable and gave a respite from our regular schedules.
One virtual scavenger hunt covered all the criteria! It also allowed us to be creative and use our homes as the venue.
Organizing the Hunt
A good virtual scavenger hunt depends mostly on planning. We handled it this way:
Idea Development in the Brain
Making a list of objects and challenges came first. To keep everyone involved, we needed a combination of simple and somewhat challenging assignments. We also thought about what most members would probably have in their houses.
Sample Objectives and Difficulties

- Something formed of metal.
- Selfie with a houseplant.
We also added some lighthearted tasks such building a tower out of domestic objects and doing a ridiculous dance.
Setting the Guidelines
Fairness depends on well defined norms. We set the following rules:
- One item could only be used once.
- The first person to reveal the item on TV received points.
- Everyone had to be on camera to take part.
Platform Selection
Since most of our members knew Zoom previously, we utilized it. Other systems like Google Meet or Microsoft Teams might also be as useful. The secret is to choose a platform everyone can readily use.
Choose a Moderator
Maintaining the seamless operation of the DG Club game depends on a competent moderator; so, we selected someone with outstanding communication abilities and fast thinking. The moderator’s duties consisted in:
- Clarifying the guidelines.
- Declaring the goods and difficulties.
- Maintaining score.
- Guaranteeing equitable behavior.
- Maintaining Time.
The Hunt Day
Excitement was in the air on the day of the hunt. We conducted the event as follows:
Starting Now
We began by getting everyone on Zoom and once again stressing the guidelines. We made sure everyone knew what expected of them and how to contribute.
Conducting the Game
Everyone hurried to locate the first thing the moderator stated in their houses. Members displayed the objects on screen as they located them. The first person to show the right object earned points for Team. We kept this process going with every item on our list with all the hurdles.
Keeping Track
Our scoring method was straightforward: five points for the first person to exhibit item.
- Three points for second position.
- One point for everyone other who located the object within the allotted time frame.
- The moderator tracked the ratings on a spreadsheet.
Including Turns
We injected several variations to keep things interesting:
- Extra credit for originality.
- Team assignments requiring members’ cooperation.
Skills Acquired
Although our online scavenger hunt went very well, we also picked some knowledge along the way:
